The Reading and Language Arts program in our Kindergarten through 3rd grade emphasizes developing good reading habits with a strong vocabulary base. Students learn to draw conclusions, predict outcomes and make comparisons. This all leads to increased comprehension.
In the upper grades, the program builds on and reinforces earlier skills through a variety of literary genres. Study of classic and modern literature is organized in thematic units or modules.
The language arts aspect of the program is designed to teach the basics of grammar and to foster the application of this knowledge into writing. Emphasis is placed on the necessity to apply these skills to disciplines beyond the scope of the classroom. It is our goal to produce skilled, enthusiastic readers and writers.
In the primary grades the math program focuses on the knowledge of numbers and arithmetic operations. This is accomplished using visuals and manipulatives. In the upper grades the program expands to include word problems, estimations, fractions, decimals and percents. The program integrates key algebra and geometry topics throughout the grades. Our approach to problem-solving techniques connects all topics to real-life activities.
The social studies program helps students understand history and connect it to their lives today. The curriculum includes a multi- dimensional approach to the study of different cultures and geographical regions. It encompasses interdisciplinary explorations, the examination of primary sources, the writing process, map study and technology.
Beginning with the local community, students progressively explore historical, geographical, and sociological perspectives. Some of our social studies units include dinosaurs, Native American cultures, the rain forest, American history, geography, government, ancient civilizations and immigration.
The science curriculum at St. Simon Stock School follows the New York State Learning Standards and the Archdiocese of New York Essential Learnings. Classifying, manipulating materials, interpreting data and predicting results are just a few of the inquiry skills that are fostered.
Students in grades 1st through 4th learn the science of the world in which they live. We use a hands-on approach to allow for independent discovery and learning.
The science program for the upper grades integrates life science, physical science, and earth science. With an emphasis on investigations, demonstrations, and activities, students continue to take an active role in their education.
